Jack Martin, a highly sought-after free agent, has made a significant decision regarding his professional football career after being let go by Carlton. Despite receiving interest from Fremantle, reports indicate that Martin has opted to join the Geelong Cats, marking an important new chapter for the 29-year-old. This move follows his delisting from Carlton, where he played 54 games over five seasons after transitioning from Gold Coast in late 2019.

Martin’s choice comes amid a competitive free agency period. Although Fremantle reportedly offered him a two-year contract, it appears Martin has prioritized the opportunity to continue his career with the Cats. Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary has noted that this decision is pivotal for Martin, especially after an injury-riddled 2024 season in which he could only feature in three games, with his last appearance being in round 22 against Hawthorn.

Originally from Claremont, Martin’s potential return to Fremantle had generated interest as the Dockers aim to enhance their forward lineup. They have been pursuing Richmond’s Shai Bolton as a key target, but Martin’s decision to join Geelong may alter their plans. With 133 goals in 151 career games, Martin’s experience could prove valuable to the Cats as they look to strengthen their squad.

As Geelong prepares for the 2025 season, they may not only welcome Martin but also Western Bulldogs midfielder Bailey Smith, who is expected to join the team on a significant six-year deal. This deal is reported to cost the Cats their No. 15 draft pick. Additionally, Geelong is also eyeing Melbourne star Clayton Oliver, who has been the subject of trade discussions for the second year running, despite having a contract that extends until 2030.

With the free agency period set to commence on Friday, Martin is eligible to be signed as a delisted free agent. This new beginning with the Geelong Cats offers him a fresh opportunity to rejuvenate his career, and fans are eager to see how this pivotal decision plays out on the field.
