The Fremantle Dockers and Peel Thunder have officially extended their WAFL partnership through to the end of 2029, reinforcing a collaboration that has already delivered significant success for both clubs. Since its inception in 2014, the partnership has provided Fremantle players not selected for AFL matches with an opportunity to develop their skills at the WAFL level by playing for Peel Thunder. This agreement has not only enhanced player development but has also contributed to Peel’s on-field achievements, including multiple premiership wins.
Under the renewed arrangement, Fremantle will continue to oversee the appointment of Peel’s Senior Men’s WAFL Coach in consultation with Peel Thunder. Meanwhile, Peel will retain control over appointing Colts, Reserves, and Assistant WAFL coaches, with input from Fremantle. This structure ensures both clubs can maintain a high-performance environment while also fostering local football talent in Western Australia.
The impact of this collaboration has been evident in Peel’s rise as a competitive force in the WAFL. Just two years into the partnership, Peel reached the WAFL finals for the first time in club history, leading to back-to-back premiership victories in 2016 and 2017. Over the past 11 seasons, Peel Thunder has made six finals appearances, competed in four grand finals, and secured three premiership titles—including a dominant 33-point victory over East Perth in last year’s WAFL Grand Final.
Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick expressed his enthusiasm for the renewed partnership, emphasizing its benefits for both clubs. “We are incredibly proud of our relationship with Peel Thunder and the success we’ve achieved together over the past 11 years,” Garlick said. “This partnership has played a crucial role in our player development system while also supporting Peel’s growth as a competitive WAFL club.” Peel Thunder CEO Paul Lekias echoed these sentiments, highlighting the club’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and competitive football program alongside Fremantle.
The collaboration has also provided young players with valuable development opportunities. In 2024, several Fremantle-listed players, including Hugh Davies, Neil Erasmus, Cooper Simpson, Liam Reidy, and Karl Worner, gained crucial finals experience with Peel Thunder. Erasmus capped off the season by winning Peel’s Best and Fairest Tuckey Medal, while Worner was named runner-up. With this extended partnership, both clubs aim to continue their success on and off the field, ensuring a strong future for WA football.
