Richard Stearman, a former defender for Huddersfield Town, has declared his retirement from the game. Over the course of two decades, the 36-year-old made 585 senior games, most of them for Leicester City and Wolves. The defender also received three promotions during his tenure.

Stearman joined the Terriers in January 2020 and played for the team for one and a half years. Before retiring, he played for Solihull Moors and Derby County after making 38 appearances for Town in the Championship.

Stearman stated in a post on X, “As players, we all know that this day would come someday. But in some sense, it has always looked to be in the future. Playing for another season will naturally occur because that is what we do.

“Well, that day has come for me now. I am officially declaring my retirement from professional football after 20 years and almost 600 appearances.

I feel tremendously lucky and honored to have represented the clubs I have when I think back on my career. I’d like to thank my agent Tam as well as all of the managers, coaches, and general staff members. None of it would have been possible without you guys.

“Thank you to all of my teammates. Every day, you have made it a complete pleasure to come to work. We have experienced tremendous highs and lows together, and I am fortunate to be able to call many of you lifelong friends. To be honest, the thing I shall miss the most is you guys.

“To the followers. I appreciate your unwavering support throughout. The game is essentially the same without you, as demonstrated by Covid. I am appreciative of the unique bonds I have formed with many of you. I have enjoyed my time at all of your clubs, please know that. I’m a fan of them all and I always will be.

“To my sister and parents. It seems like not enough to say thank you. Your unending selflessness has enabled me to fulfill my ambition. I’m hoping I did you proud.

And lastly, to my amazing wife Beth. My greatest ally in both happy and bad times. I will always be grateful to you for giving me three lovely children.
