J.J. Redick, now the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, has yet to experience his first regular-season game as a coach in the NBA. Despite this, former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy has already drawn comparisons between Redick and one of the league’s most successful coaches, Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors. Van Gundy points out that both Redick and Kerr transitioned into coaching after careers as players, emphasizing their shared understanding and analytical approach to the game.

In an interview with the Southern California News Group, Van Gundy remarked, “He’s someone who really had to learn the game deeply and rely on his knowledge to excel. It’s something that required a lot of thought and effort on his part. NBA basketball is tough for anyone, but for some, like Redick, it demands even more focus and dedication to compete at that level.”

Van Gundy highlighted the similarities between Redick and Kerr, noting that both men had to work hard as players and developed a deep understanding of basketball’s intricacies to succeed. He believes this thoughtful approach to the game could serve Redick well in his coaching career. “I think there are clear parallels between him and what Steve Kerr accomplished. There’s a lot they share in terms of their journey,” Van Gundy added.

The comparison between Redick and Kerr is particularly significant given Kerr’s incredible success with the Warriors, including multiple championships. If Redick can channel even a portion of that success during his time leading the Lakers, it’s safe to say that Lakers fans will be excited about the future.

Ultimately, Van Gundy’s praise suggests that Redick’s transition from player to coach could be a smooth one, much like Kerr’s. The Lakers are hoping that his basketball knowledge and work ethic will translate into victories, setting the stage for an exciting era under his leadership.
