Former Fremantle Dockers Forward Josh Corbett Opens Up on Hip Replacement, Retirement, and What’s Nex
Josh Corbett, a former Fremantle Dockers forward, has shared his deeply personal journey through the highs and lows of his football career. In a candid reflection, Corbett revealed the physical and emotional challenges he faced, including a significant hip replacement surgery, which ultimately led to his retirement from the AFL at the young age of 28. Despite these hurdles, Corbett’s outlook remains optimistic as he embarks on a new chapter of his life.
In November 2023, Corbett underwent a full hip replacement, an extraordinary procedure for a professional athlete in his twenties. The decision came after enduring persistent hip issues that limited his ability to compete at the highest level. Determined to overcome the odds, Corbett initially expressed hope of returning to AFL, aiming to become the first player to make a comeback after such a major surgery. Unfortunately, the challenges of recovery and rehabilitation proved too great, leading him to announce his retirement in September 2024.
This wasn’t Corbett’s first encounter with adversity. During his time in the VFL, he suffered a severe eye injury that temporarily left him blind in one eye. The recovery process involved isolating himself in a dark room for weeks, a particularly daunting task for someone with his sociable personality. Nevertheless, Corbett’s resilience and determination to achieve his AFL dream saw him push through, ultimately joining the Gold Coast Suns and later the Fremantle Dockers.
Corbett’s time at Fremantle, however, was marked by struggles with his hip condition, limiting him to just five games in 2023. Despite the setback, he remained committed to the team, fostering strong relationships within the club and the community. His gratitude for the support he received during his career has been a cornerstone of his positive attitude, even as he faced the reality of stepping away from professional football.
Looking ahead, Corbett has transitioned to playing with a country club, allowing him to stay connected to the sport he loves while embracing a less demanding role. His journey serves as an inspiring testament to perseverance and adaptability, showcasing how athletes can redefine their paths beyond the professional arena. Corbett’s story is not only about overcoming challenges but also about finding purpose and fulfillment in life after
the game.
