Duke’s Dominant Defensive Display
The Duke basketball team rebounded impressively from their tough loss to Kentucky with a commanding 86-35 victory over Wofford on Saturday in Durham. The game showcased an exceptional defensive effort, marking one of the most dominant performances in the program’s history. Though Wofford is not as formidable an opponent as Kentucky, the Blue Devils proved they could regroup and rise to the occasion, locking in a historic defensive milestone.

Breaking Defensive Records
Duke’s defensive prowess was on full display, as they allowed only 35 points—the fewest they’ve conceded in the shot-clock era. The previous record of 37 points came in a 1997 matchup against UNC Greensboro. To find a more lopsided defensive effort, one would have to go back to 1968, when the Blue Devils held North Carolina State to fewer points. The performance demonstrated the team’s ability to adapt and recover after a setback, emphasizing their commitment to the process of growth throughout the season.

Wofford’s Struggles Against Duke’s Defense
Wofford, now 1-3 on the season, was held to just 14 points in the first half, tying for the second-fewest points Duke has allowed before halftime in the shot-clock era. Only twice before had the Blue Devils delivered a more suffocating first-half performance—against Eastern Michigan in 2018 (13 points) and Notre Dame in 2022 (14 points). Wofford’s shooting woes were glaring, as they hit just six of their 30 shots in the first half and missed 18 of their 20 three-point attempts. Notably, the Terriers didn’t attempt a single free throw in the first half.

Offensive Contributions Balance the Win
Ironically, Wofford scored the game’s first points before Duke launched a staggering 43-7 run, setting the tone for the rest of the matchup. Tyrese Proctor led the Blue Devils in scoring with 15 points, bouncing back strongly after a challenging outing against Kentucky. Caleb Foster also had a solid performance, connecting on four of his six shots, including three from beyond the arc. Isaiah Evans and Khaman Maluach joined the scoring effort, with every Duke player logging at least nine minutes contributing offensively.

Unselfish Play Fuels Success
Duke’s offensive efficiency complemented their stellar defense, as they tallied 24 assists on 30 made field goals. Their ball movement was seamless, and the team shot an impressive 48.4% from the field and 42.1% from three-point range. This balanced effort exemplified head coach Jon Scheyer’s emphasis on teamwork and resilience. “I’m really proud of how we shared the ball today,” Scheyer remarked, highlighting the importance of responding effectively after a loss.

A Grueling Road Ahead
With the victory, the No. 6 Blue Devils improved to 3-1 on the season, but their upcoming schedule presents significant challenges. They leave the comfort of Cameron Indoor Stadium for a two-game road trip, starting with a clash against No. 9 Arizona on Friday night. Following that, they’ll face top-ranked Kansas in Las Vegas on Tuesday. These games will test Duke’s mettle as they aim to solidify their status as a national contender.

A Season of Growth and Grit
Duke’s performance against Wofford was more than just a win—it was a statement. The Blue Devils demonstrated their ability to bounce back, recalibrate, and execute at an elite level. While tougher opponents await, this victory serves as a reminder of their potential and the importance of resilience in a long and demanding season. Fans have every reason to be optimistic as the team continues to evolve.
