In an intense seventh AFLW RAC Derby, the West Coast Eagles fell short, succumbing to the Fremantle Dockers by 23 points at Sullivan Logistics Stadium. Despite a spirited second-half effort, the Eagles were unable to overcome a goalless first half, ending the match 5.5 (35) to 1.6 (12). This result strengthens Fremantle’s record in the Derby to 7-0 and keeps their finals hopes alive, while diminishing the Eagles’ chances of making the cut.
The first half saw the Eagles struggle to find their rhythm, failing to convert opportunities and heading into halftime trailing by 23 points. Fremantle’s balanced performance, marked by pressure and skill, allowed them to maintain control throughout the match. Mim Strom delivered an outstanding performance in the ruck, recording 48 hitouts and 15 disposals, earning her the prestigious Derby Medal. Aisling McCarthy, a former Eagle, also shone with 20 disposals and a goal, playing a crucial role in Fremantle’s victory.
West Coast midfielder Bella Lewis was the standout for her side, collecting 26 disposals and seven clearances. However, her efforts alone were not enough to tip the scales in the Eagles’ favor, as Fremantle’s superior numbers and structured play proved too much. Early goals from McCarthy and Gabby Biedenweg-Webster set the tone for the Dockers, with Dana East further extending their lead in the first quarter.
The Eagles had several opportunities to narrow the gap, particularly in the second and third quarters, but failed to capitalize on key moments. Ella Roberts missed two set shots, and Mikayla Western’s break towards goal failed to convert. Fremantle’s solid defense held strong, and by the final quarter, the Dockers had all but sealed their victory with Orlagh Lally snapping a decisive late goal.
The final whistle blew with Fremantle comfortably ahead, maintaining their unbeaten Derby record and continuing their push for a top-four finish. The Eagles, despite their best efforts, will need to regroup as they face the remainder of the season with slim hopes of securing a place in the finals.
