Fremantle Dockers: Reflects on a Legacy and Embraces New Horizons”

Fremantle Dockers icon Peter Bell has announced his departure from the club, making the “difficult” decision to step down from his role as Executive General Manager (EGM) of Football Talent, Strategy, and Special Projects. Bell, who played an influential 163 games for the Dockers and previously served as the club’s football chief from 2019 to 2023, has decided it’s time to move on and explore new challenges. His departure ends a remarkable chapter for Fremantle, where Bell has been instrumental both on and off the field.

During his tenure as EGM, Bell’s work had a significant impact on the club’s strategic development, particularly in identifying and acquiring talent across the men’s and women’s leagues. After transitioning his role to Joe Briety in 2023, Bell focused on talent acquisition, bringing fresh energy to the Dockers’ recruitment and development programs. Reflecting on his decision, Bell expressed pride in his contributions but felt it was the right moment to move forward and make space for the next generation of club leaders, including list managers David Walls and Darryn Fry, who will now oversee upcoming AFL and AFLW drafts.

In his parting statement, Bell said, “This has been a difficult decision, but one I feel is the right decision. I am extremely proud of my contribution to the Club over the years as a player, board member, and executive team member, but I’m keen to explore my next challenge.” As he departs, his responsibilities will be distributed across Fremantle’s executive team, with Walls (AFL) and Fry (AFLW) reporting to Briety to ensure a seamless transition.

Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick praised Bell’s extensive contributions to the club, highlighting his leadership during critical periods, including the Covid-impacted seasons. Garlick noted Bell’s instrumental role in overseeing essential roster changes and managing coaching transitions for both men’s and women’s teams. “Peter has played a vital role in getting our AFL and AFLW programs to where they are today,” Garlick said. “We are extremely grateful for Peter’s contribution and wish him, Lana, and his family all the best for the future.”

With Bell’s departure, the Dockers now look forward to a new era, aiming to return to the finals after a challenging two seasons since their impressive 2022 performance. As they prepare for the National Draft with Picks 14, 30, and 67, Fremantle recently welcomed Shai Bolton from Richmond, setting high hopes for a successful rebuild that builds on Bell’s legacy and dedication.
