The Dallas Mavericks have finalized a deal to re-sign veteran forward Markieff Morris, adding a familiar face to their roster. To make room for Morris, the team is expected to waive A.J. Lawson, whose contract was not guaranteed. This move marks Morris’s return to Dallas after he was part of the Kyrie Irving trade in 2023.

During his previous stint with the Mavericks, Morris played in 26 games, averaging 2.5 points per game. Notably, he contributed to the team’s performance in the NBA Finals, hitting a crucial three-pointer in Game 4 against the Boston Celtics. Despite his limited playing time, his leadership and experience have been highly valued by the Mavericks.

Morris, who has played for eight different NBA teams since being drafted in 2011, previously won an NBA Championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. His tenure with the Lakers saw him average 5.9 points per game during the playoffs. Although he won’t be reuniting with his twin brother, Marcus Morris, he has expressed his enthusiasm about returning to Dallas throughout the offseason.

The Mavericks’ decision to bring back Morris highlights their appreciation for his veteran presence and leadership qualities. While some fans had hoped Morris would transition to a coaching role, he has opted to continue his playing career with Dallas.
