Pat Freiermuth, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ standout tight end, has recently finalized a significant contract extension with the team. On Friday, the Steelers and Freiermuth reached an agreement on a four-year deal valued at $48.4 million. However, details revealed later indicate that the contract is effectively a five-year agreement worth $49.9 million. This arrangement includes a base salary of $1.1 million for 2024, complemented by a $10.5 million signing bonus. The signing bonus is distributed across the contract’s duration, resulting in a cap hit of $3.64 million for the current season.

Looking ahead, the contract stipulates that Freiermuth’s cap hit will peak in 2025 at $12.885 million. Notably, all guaranteed money is allocated within the initial two years of the contract. Should the Steelers choose to trade or release Freiermuth after the 2025 season, they would face a $6.3 million dead cap penalty. With this new deal, Freiermuth ascends to become the ninth highest-paid tight end in the NFL.

Pat Freiermuth, who was drafted by the Steelers in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft from Penn State, has demonstrated consistent performance over his three seasons with the team. To date, he has played in 45 games, recording 159 receptions for a total of 1,564 yards and 11 touchdowns. His most impressive season came in 2022, where he achieved a career-high 63 catches for 732 yards and two touchdowns. Despite a hamstring injury affecting his 2023 season, he managed to secure 32 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns. In the Steelers’ recent Week 1 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, Freiermuth contributed with four receptions totaling 27 yards.

Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson expressed his excitement and support for Freiermuth’s new contract, emphasizing the tight end’s leadership and work ethic. Wilson highlighted Freiermuth’s exceptional composure and the impact of his leadership on the team, noting that such financial recognition is a well-deserved reward for his dedication and hard work.

This contract extension not only reflects Freiermuth’s significant contributions to the Steelers but also marks a key milestone in his career. As the season progresses, both Freiermuth and the Steelers will be looking forward to building on this strong foundation and achieving continued success on the field.
