Now that the transfer window is open, it appears that a Premier League team is willing to make a big expenditure to get a Sunderland player to leave the Stadium of Light this summer.
Sunderland enjoy steady summer so far
The majority of Sunderland supporters believed that their team required a significant reconstruction during the transfer window after Sunderland finished 16th in the Championship standings the previous season. In the first few weeks of the summer, Sunderland brought in a few experienced players to get things going.
Goalkeeper Simon Moore was the first player to arrive on Wearside. He was a free agent when he joined the Black Cats from Coventry City, another team in the second division. The 34-year-old signed a two-year contract at the Stadium of Light, with the option to extend it by another year.
Alan Browne, who similarly joined on a free transfer from Preston North End, arrived shortly after Moore. Ian Poveda completes the Black Cats’ latest wave of free transfers, joining Wearside following the expiration of his Leeds United contract.
While Sunderland supporters will be thrilled to hear about the new arrivals, there may be some high-profile departures from the Wearside team this summer. In recent weeks, Premier League clubs have shown interest in both Jack Clarke and Jobe Bellingham, whose futures at the club are currently in jeopardy.
Leading teams frequently shop at the Stadium of Light, so it seems like one of the Premier League’s newcomers is prepared to shell out a lot of cash to recruit a Black Cat this summer.
