Collingwood’s Comeback Mission: How the Magpies Are Fueling Their 2025 Redemption

The disappointment of Collingwood’s unsuccessful AFL premiership defense in 2024 is serving as powerful motivation for the team’s resurgence in 2025. After clinching the 2023 title, the Magpies entered the following season with high hopes of securing back-to-back victories. However, a string of injuries and inconsistent performances saw them finish ninth, well short of their expectations. Star forward Bobby Hill, who won the 2023 Norm Smith Medal, admits that watching the grand final from the sidelines was a tough pill to swallow.

“It gets to you, seeing other teams play in the grand final when you know what you’re capable of,” Hill shared. “We didn’t have a great year, and to go from a premiership win to missing the finals entirely—it hurts. But that pain is pushing us to be better this time around.” With a renewed sense of hunger, the Magpies have returned to pre-season training in top shape, eager to reclaim their status as a dominant force in the league.

One silver lining of missing the finals is the extra time to reset and prepare for the upcoming season. Hill believes the break has helped the squad refocus and reignite their drive. “That downtime made us even hungrier. Everyone’s come back in great condition, and we’re ready to put in the work.” Collingwood has also been active in the trade market, securing key recruits like former Port Adelaide defender Dan Houston and ex-St Kilda forward Tim Membrey. These additions, along with the expected return of Nick Daicos and Jordan de Goey from injuries, could provide the Magpies with the firepower they need.

Reflecting on their past success, Hill points to Collingwood’s high-energy, free-flowing style of play as the missing ingredient in 2024. “In 2023, our ball movement was the best in the competition, and we played with speed and confidence. That fell away last year, but if we bring that intensity back and focus on our strengths, we’ll be in a great position.” His commitment to the club remains strong, with contract talks on hold as he focuses on delivering his best performances.

Beyond his AFL commitments, Hill is also embracing an important cultural moment, as he and teammate Ash Johnson prepare to represent the Indigenous All Stars against Fremantle on February 15. “Wearing the Indigenous jersey and playing for our people in WA is an incredible honor,” said Hill, a proud Whadjuk-Ballardong Noongar man. “It’s right up there with playing in the Indigenous Round. I’ve had a solid off-season, my body feels great, and I can’t wait to showcase my skills.” As Collingwood gears up for the 2025 season, the message is clear: the hunger is back, and the Magpies are ready to reclaim their place att he top.
