Christian Wück Reflects on 2024 with Germany’s Women’s Football Team and Sets Sights on UEFA Women’s EURO 2025

Christian Wück, appointed as the coach of Germany’s women’s football team in August 2024, has spent his first few months working on fostering a positive atmosphere and implementing fresh ideas for the team. In an interview at the close of 2024, Wück shared his thoughts on his early days in charge, the team’s development, and the upcoming UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 in Switzerland. He emphasized the importance of confidence, belief, and effective communication within the team as key elements for future success.

Reflecting on the past year, Wück expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress. “We knew we needed a fresh start, and with the retirement of key players like Alexandra Popp, Marina Hegering, and Merle Frohms, the timing was right for that change,” he said. The coach highlighted the team’s openness to new ideas, as demonstrated by the successful 4-3 victory over England in his debut match. This result was instrumental in establishing trust and belief among the players, proving that Wück’s approach could lead to success. With two wins and two defeats to date, Wück described his start as positive, focusing on gaining valuable insights from each match and refining the team’s tactics.

As Wück moves into 2025, he sees the current phase as one of solidifying the team’s structures and processes. The coach believes that trust and mutual understanding between himself and the team are crucial for long-term success. “The team now knows what I expect, and I have faith in their individual abilities,” he explained. Looking ahead to the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, Wück emphasized the importance of building a strong core group of leaders within the squad, who will be key to providing stability and guidance on the field.

When discussing Germany’s group at the upcoming tournament, which includes Poland, Denmark, and Sweden, Wück warned against underestimating any opponent. “We can beat any team if we perform well, but we must be cautious not to take weaker sides for granted,” he stated. His goal is to instill a belief in the team’s ability to win the tournament, regardless of the opposition. Confidence and belief in their style of play, according to Wück, will be decisive factors in achieving success.

Wück also addressed the importance of the Nations League in the lead-up to EURO 2025, describing it as a crucial competition for building confidence and refining the team’s play. With some younger players making their debut under his leadership, Wück confirmed that while the team would not undergo major changes moving forward, he remained open to calling up new talent if they showed promise. In his closing thoughts, Wück reflected on his personal journey as a coach of a women’s team, noting that his experience so far had been both fulfilling and enlightening. As 2024 came to a close, he looked forward to spending time with his family over the festive period, before gearing up for the challenges

of 2025.
