Charges Placed on Accused in Relation to Collingwood, Ont., Christmas Thefts from Vehicles
Two individuals have been formally charged following a series of thefts from unlocked vehicles in Collingwood, Ontario, during the festive season. According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the incidents occurred between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, involving stolen items such as cash, gift cards, bank cards, and tools, as well as the theft of a vehicle.
In total, the accused face 37 charges linked to 19 incidents, reflecting the extensive nature of the crime spree. Police allege that the suspects used stolen bank cards to purchase fuel during their activities, further compounding the charges against them. The thefts caused alarm among residents, leading to a significant police investigation.
Law enforcement launched their inquiry after receiving numerous reports of thefts from vehicles over the holiday period. With the help of the public, the suspects were identified and apprehended on Thursday. One of the men attempted to evade arrest and reportedly assaulted an officer during the process. Thankfully, the officer was unharmed, and the fleeing suspect was quickly detained.
The charges against the accused include theft under $5,000, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, assaulting a peace officer, and fleeing from police. The suspects, aged 30 and 33, appeared for a bail hearing on Friday morning as the investigation continues.
