Georgia Tech may burn Georgia, Florida State could stumble against Florida, and Alabama might lose to Chattanooga and forget where the stadium is.
1. or 2. 13-0 Big Ten ChampionIt doesn’t really matter either way. A 13-0 Michigan or Ohio State would be a mortal lock for the Rose Bowl as a College Football Playoff semifinal.1. or 2. 13-0 GeorgiaAgain, it doesn’t matter. If the SEC Champion is in the College Football Playoff, it’ll almost certainly be in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.3. 13-0 WashingtonIt won’t get to 1 unless the Big Ten and SEC champions both have one loss. In the perfect CFP world – which it can do, even though it doesn’t rank on geography – Washington goes to the Rose Bowl to face the Big Ten champion.4. 13-0 Florida StateFlorida State probably can’t lose. It would be the lowest of the Power Five champs if the other four are 12-1 or 13-0 if it loses to Florida and still wins the ACC Championship.5. or 6. 12-1 AlabamaDeep breath. In the pecking order, Alabama beating a 12-0 Georgia in the SEC Championship would trump just about anything anyone else could do outside of, maybe, who wins the 11-0 vs 11-0 Michigan-Ohio State game.If Texas is 11-2, 12-1 Alabama is in the College Football Playoff no matter what. However, if Texas – who beat Bama by 10 at Bama – is the 12-1 Big 12 champ, it would be ranked higher. So if Big Ten champ, Florida State, and Washington all win out, and Texas goes 12-1, yeah, the SEC is – PROBABLY, the committee would have to break precedent – out of the College Football Playoff. Now, with all of that said, the BECAUSE IT’S ALABAMA clause in the College Football Playoff committee’s head absolutely might still put Bama in over Texas if thanks to the win over Georgia. 5. or 6. or 7. 12-1 OregonSo here’s how this gets even funkier.Again, take score out the equation for now – this might change if the Ducks put 55 on the board in the Pac-12 Championship – but if Oregon can get to the Pac-12 title game and win it, it needs Georgia to win. This is all projection, but if Georgia beats Alabama – and everything else goes chalk – the order would likely be Big Ten champ, Georgia, Florida State, Oregon.BUT, if Alabama beats Georgia, and Texas goes 12-1 … Big Ten champ, Florida State, Texas, Alabama.SO …3. or 7. 12-1 TexasAgain, in the pecking order at the moment, put 12-1 Big 12 Champion Texas at 7 – knowing that it would move up when others drop. However, it might hit a hard ceiling to get into top 4 if Alabama doesn’t win the SEC championship. If things go down the line chalk, Big Ten champion, Georgia, FSU, 13-0 Washington or 12-1 Oregon. Texas would probably finish fifth – the loss to Oklahoma would be worse than the Oregon loss to Washington.Maybe. It would be a battle in the room if its 12-1 Oregon or 12-1 Texas four that fourth spot. However, again, if Alabama beats Georgia, Texas would have to be put ahead of the Tide – at least in the CFP committee’s own mind – and it would be in.The other key would a Florida State loss. Texas would absolutely finish in the top four as a 12-1 Power Five champion ahead of a 12-1 FSU. 8. or 4. 12-1 SEC Champion loser GeorgiaIf Georgia loses to Tennessee or Georgia Tech and still wins the SEC Championship over Alabama, it would still get in over 12-1 Texas and/or, possibly, 12-1 Oregon.9. 12-1 LouisvilleIt would take a TON of things to happen for the Cardinals to get in – the loss to a miserable Pitt team is a killer. However, the College Football Playoff committee has never left out a 12-1 Power Five champ for an 11-win team or a Power Five championship game loser.10. Michigan vs Ohio State loserThis is more plausible than Louisville getting in, but it’s about the pecking order in this. The 11-1 Michigan-Ohio State loser – as long as its a close fight – would get a ton of love, especially when (not if) the Big Ten East champ beats Iowa in the Big Ten Championship. It would take a lot of things to happen. Essentially, there would have to be three Power Five champs with two losses, but it worked out last year for the Big Ten.- College Football Rankings Week 12- Bowl Projections, Week 12- College Football Playoff Projections- Top 5 Heisman Trophy Contenders
