REPORT: Arizona Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon Comments on QB Kyler Murray’s Future With Team
The Arizona Cardinals have had a season to forget. Unfortunately, they have just a 4-12 record this season. This put them in an awkward position when it came to draft implications.
Why is this? Because going into Week 17, the Cardinals held the second overall pick. However, they upset the Philadelphia Eagles and moved down to the fourth overall pick as a result. After this win, Arizona head coach Jonathan Gannon had interesting comments on QB Kyler Murray.
Gannon Says Murray Is the Arizona Cardinals’ Future
In an interview on The Burns & Gambo Show, Gannon was asked by the show hosts if there was any doubt as to whether Murray would be the quarterback next season for Arizona. Gannon responded with a firm no. He made it clear to the interviewers that Murray was the guy by saying this:
Timing Is Interesting
The timing of this statement is interesting, to say the least. Why is this? Because of the spot that the Arizona Cardinals find themselves in.
As mentioned above, the Cardinals lost some draft leverage due to their win over the Eagles. They fell from the second to the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. This gives the Cardinals a few fewer options to draft a replacement quarterback even if they wanted to.
Also, this statement came after arguably the Cardinals’ biggest win of the season. The 3-12 Cardinals managed to defeat the 11-4 Philadelphia Eagles on the road. The win also heaving impacted the NFC playoff picture, with the Eagles now being vulnerable to losing the NFC East division.
Kyler Murray in 2023
So, how has Murray done in the 2023 NFL season? For starters, he missed more than half of the season due to recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in the previous season. As a result, he has only played seven games in 2023.
The good news for Murray and the Cardinals is that he has made a positive impact in those positive games. Murray has 1,537 passing yards, nine touchdown passes, 211 rushing yards, and three rushing touchdowns.
More importantly, the Cardinals are 3-4 with him compared to 1-8 without him. It is safe to say that Murray gave them the best chance to win of any option they had this season. Now, Gannon and the Cardinals are seemingly ready to run it back in a full season.
