Hatters manager chooses a roster of 24 players for the Premier League season.
Luton boss Rob Edwards hasn’t completely ruled out dipping into the free transfer market if he feels his Town squad needs bolstering ahead of the January transfer window, although declared there were no plans in place to do so just yet.
With all top flight teams having to submit a list of 25 senior players they will pick from for the Premier League campaign, players under the age of 21 do not need to be included, with clubs able to field as many as they wish throughout the season.
New signing for the Hatters Teden Mengi, the former Manchester United defender who is still only 21, is the most high-profile player in that category at Kenilworth Road, with young academy graduate Joe Johnson also capable of being selected in the first division if possible.
Following yesterday’s deadline, Luton Town have named 24 players in their first team squad, including the injured trio of Dan Potts, Jordan Clark, and Gabe Osho, leaving a single spot open.
When asked if he will attempt to fill it before the free agent market opens again, Edwards responded, “We’ll see, I don’t want to ever rule anything out, but I’m really happy with the group that we’ve got now.”
“I don’t see much happening, but you never know, I’ll leave you with that.”
“At the moment, we’re not working on anything.”
Edwards has made a total of 12 summer acquisitions since Luton’s promotion to the top division, restructuring his team for the challenges that lie ahead, with more than that number also departing Kenilworth Road.
Although Town have exceeded their transfer record on multiple occasions, they haven’t spent anywhere near the sums that other teams have, with even the promoted combination of Burnley and Sheffield United splashing out rumoured payments of £19 million and £18.5 million on James Trafford and Cameron Archer, respectively.
Despite this, the Hatters manager has been pleased with what he has achieved in the market, saying: “Everyone knew we weren’t going to go and spend a hundred million, it’s just not what we’re going to do.”
“We do things our way, and what we’ve done will serve us well for a long time.”
“It speeds up the new stadium, but I think it’s 16 in total, including loans that have been disbursed, and 12 new faces have come in, so it’s been a big turnaround for us.”
“I’m very pleased with the people we’ve been able to bring in, and it’s clear that we now have a very strong working group.”
“I get questions because ‘you’ve got to be able to spend money,’ but that’s not our way, and 17 million pounds, or whatever, is a good amount for us.”
“I believe we’ve brought in some fantastic players who will complement the way we play.”
“They’ve settled in really well, improving with each game so far, and hopefully we’ll see some more on Saturday.”
