Midfield switch on the cards for Cats star
“I think I can get a lot more flexible in my role.”
Geelong defender Tom Stewart is in line for more midfield minutes in 2024 as the freshly re-signed Cats star looks to strengthen his game.
Stewart has emerged as one of the premier defenders of the competition this century, claiming five successive All-Australian selections since his second year in the system.
The mature-aged recruit is one of the most damaging defenders in the competition and is still looking to add to his game, potentially doing so further up the field next year.
Stewart spent time in midfield on a quartet of occasions this year to aid the Cats’ undermanned engine room, with the 30-year-old excited by the thought of getting another taste in the centre of the field.
Speaking after recently recommitting to the club until the end of 2027, Stewart said he’s ready to increase exposure in midfield next season.

“I think I can get a lot more flexible in my role,” Stewart told media.
“Being subjected to some midfield minutes last year and some change in that sort of thing is something that is going to strengthen my game.
“To be able to up around the ball and win the ball at the source and help the forward half of the ground is something that is new to me, but I’m really open to whatever the club needs me to do and the role I’m sort of seen to fit.”
Geelong’s midfield unit is set to be buoyed by the return of veteran onballer Cam Guthrie, who was limited to six games in 2023 due to injuries.
The premiership Cat’s return will join the likes of captain Patrick Dangerfield, utility Mark Blicavs, hard nut Tom Atkins and emerging pair Max Holmes and Tanner Bruhn as Geelong’s leading midfield ensemble.
The Cats will also be hoping to have 2022 first-round selection Jhye Clark back from a foot injury that kept the teenager to just one game in his maiden year at Kardinia Park.
Geelong’s pre-season draw will see them face Carlton and Essendon prior to their Round 1 meeting with St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday, March 16.
