Former Georgia football star and Philadelphia Eagles first-round NFL Draft pick Jalen Carter was driving with a suspended license on the night of a fatal car crash that killed two people in Athens, according to court documents and media reports.

That information came to light in a lawsuit filed by the father of Devin Willock, the Georgia football player who died in the accident, against the University of Georgia Athletic Association, Carter, and others, seeking $40 million in damages.

Police said that Carter was racing against the vehicle being driven by Georgia recruiting staff member Chandler LeCroy prior to the wreck that killed her and Willock and injured two others.

Carter faced charges of reckless driving and racing, ultimately pleading no contest and was sentenced to 12 months of probation, a $1,000 fine, and 80 hours of community service, but was not charged with driving on a suspended license.

According to the court documents, Carter’s suspended license dates back to a speeding ticket he received in Lake County, Florida, last summer. He paid a $133.50 fine in August and took a traffic course to avoid having points put on the license.

But he did not complete the course in the required time frame, resulting in his license being suspended in November, according to the records. It was reinstated on Jan. 26, almost two weeks after the crash that killed Willock and LeCroy.

Carter’s attorney responded to the claims by saying that the suspension was not listed on his driving record back in March.

“The driver’s history that the solicitor’s office ran back in March of 2023 did not show any license suspension,” Carter’s attorney told ESPN. “Otherwise, they would have charged him with that.”
