Former Alabama Football Receiver Suspension Reduced
The National Football League and the National Football League Players Association issued a joint memo on Friday to update its policies in regards to gambling. The league is now punishing player harsher for gambling on NFL games, but has reduced punishments for gambling on non-NFL games in team facilities.
A player will receive a one-year suspension for gambling on NFL games, and a two-year suspension if a player wagers on his own team.
Non-NFL wagers made inside the team facilities will result in a two-game suspension without pay for the first violation, a six-game suspension without pay for the second violation and a year-long suspension without pay for the third violation.
Due to the updated policies, former Crimson Tide wide receiver Jameson Williams is among offenders who will be reinstated to their teams on Monday. Williams was suspended for the first six games of 2023 but has seen his suspension reduced to just four games.
The Detroit Lions have gone 3-1 through the season’s first four weeks and currently lead the NFC North. Williams is set to return to the Lions Oct. 8 home game against the Carolina Panthers.
The speedster was a first round draft pick in the 2022 draft but missed most of his rookie year due to recovering from ACL surgery. He appeared in six games last year and recorded one reception for 41 yards and a touchdown while also taking a single carry for 40 yards.
He joins a receiving core that hauled in 91 receptions for 1,029 yards and six touchdowns, primarily led by Amon-Ra St. Brown.
