In a recent episode of the ‘Pit Talk’ podcast, Matt Birt, lead commentator for the MotoGP world TV feed, shared his view on Jorge Martin’s current performance. Birt believes that Martin, who placed second to Francesco Bagnaia last season, has been fueled by a renewed determination after being passed over by Ducati—not once, but twice. These rejections seem to have pushed the 26-year-old rider to reach new levels in his racing.

Ducati recently confirmed they would keep Enea Bastianini as Bagnaia’s teammate for 2024, leaving Martin without a factory seat. Adding to this, Ducati later chose Marc Marquez to join the Gresini Ducati team over Martin after the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello in June. This decision came as a major blow to Martin, who quickly signed with Aprilia in response. Birt suggests that this series of disappointments may be what Martin needed to find another gear, unlocking a deeper potential within him.

Birt emphasized that the impact of Ducati’s decisions on Martin shouldn’t be underestimated. “Jorge hasn’t spoken much about it publicly, but he was absolutely devastated when he lost the chance for a factory Ducati seat last year, and again this year,” Birt shared, underscoring just how strongly Martin felt about being overlooked.

As the MotoGP season heads into its final showdown in Barcelona, Renita Vermeulen and Matt Clayton teamed up with Birt in the latest ‘Pit Talk’ episode. Together, they examined every angle of the title fight between Martin and reigning champion Bagnaia. With Ducati’s choice still fresh in the background, Martin’s pursuit of the championship carries an added layer of motivation, setting the stage for an intense finale.

The rivalry between Martin and Bagnaia has added significant excitement to the season, and with the finish line in sight, all eyes will be on Barcelona. Birt’s insights suggest Martin may still have something to prove—not only to his competitors but perhaps most of all to Ducati.
