It appears that Boston could sign the former Cardinals pitcher.

 

One former member of the St. Louis Cardinals could soon find a new home.

Former Cardinals pitcher Jordan Montgomery has been one of the most talked-about free agents since the 2023 season ended. Over the previous few seasons, he has emerged as one of the league’s most consistent left-handed pitchers.

Montgomery has had an ERA of less than 4.00 in each of the last three seasons and has remained healthy. Last season, St. Louis traded the big lefty to the Texas Rangers, where he was an important component of the team’s rotation on the way to the World Series.

The 31-year-old entered the offseason looking for a massive contract but hasn’t been able to find it yet. Spring Training now is here and it seems like his asking price also has dropped. He still is looking to find his next home and one club that reportedly has met with him recently is the Boston Red Sox, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.

“The Red Sox had a Zoom meeting with Jordan Montgomery recently,” Olney said. “He’d represent an upgrade for their (2024 rotation), and if signed to a long-term deal, could be part of the staff rotation. They certainly have the payroll flexibility to make it happen.”

Montgomery is one of the top free agents still available and it seems like he could end up signing soon. Boston has been linked to him on many occasions so it wouldn’t be surprising if it ended up landing him.

St. Louis also has been mentioned as an option for a reunion, but a signing still should be considered unlikely at this point.
