Gino Torretta, the 1991 Heisman Trophy winner, will have his No. 13 jersey retired by the Miami Hurricanes. Torretta guided the Hurricanes to a national championship.
The Miami Hurricanes said on Thursday that when they play the Louisville Cardinals on November 18, they will formally retire former quarterback Gino Torretta’s number 13.
“We are thrilled to declare the retirement of Gino Torretta’s No. 13 jersey,” stated Dan Radakovich, vice president and director of athletics. “As the most decorated collegiate athlete in University of Miami football history, Gino is a member of our Ring of Honor, the greatest accolade bestowed upon a player or coach in the sport. On November 18, we’re excited to honor Gino and his family at Hard Rock Stadium.
Torretta went an incredible 26-2 as a starting QB at Miami. He led the Hurricanes to their 1991 national championship before winning the Heisman Trophy in 1992.
Torretta becomes just the fifth Hurricane to have his number retired. George Mira (#10), Vinny Testaverde (#14), Jim Dooley (#42), and Ted Hendricks (#89) are the others. Torretta and Testaverde are the only two Heisman winners in Hurricanes history.
Torretta was inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame in 2003, added to the Hurricanes’ Ring of Honor in 2008, and enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
Two current Hurricanes players wear the number 13: defensive end Chantz Williams and wide receiver Michael Redding III. They’ll wear a commemorative patch on their jerseys for the remainder of the season.
