Hussain and Collingwood, two former captains of England, debate if this is their “worst World Cup” after Sri Lanka forced England to the verge of elimination.

Nearly eliminated from the 2023 World Cup is England. England virtually crashed out of the tournament on Thursday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru after yet another dismal batting display against Sri Lanka, which has paradoxically been their strength throughout. England chose to bat on a wicket that gave spongy bounce in an attempt to recover from their 229-run thumping at the hands of South Africa. They crumbled for a mere 156 runs, which the 1996 champions successfully chased down in 25.4 overs.

The former captains of the reigning champions, Paul Collingwood and Nasser Hussain, had an insightful discussion on Star Sports over whether this was their “worst ever World Cup campaign” following their team’s fourth loss of the season, which includes a shocking loss to Afghanistan last week.

In just two World Cup editions has England suffered four losses in the group stage. The other occurred in 2015 after Bangladesh astounded them and left them soul-searching, which ultimately led to a white-ball revolution. After rising above the ashes of that defeat, England won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia and the 2019 ODI World Cup at home.

Most people thought that England might successfully defend their championship in India this year because of their two outstanding campaigns, but Jos Buttler’s team has put on a “disappointing” display that has analysts and veterans stunned by their near elimination.
