The College Football Hall of Fame already recognizes him. He is already a member of the Miami University Ring of Honor. He also won the Heisman Trophy for the 1992 season, as ardent supporters of the Miami Hurricanes are well aware. Now, the legendary Gino Torretta of the Hurricanes is receiving his most recent honor—a unique one.

Torretta’s number thirteen jersey will be retired on November 18 during UM’s last home regular-season game against Louisville, the Miami Dolphins announced on Thursday. Torretta, 53, told the Miami Herald on Thursday, “It’s awesome.” An enormous honor. “A number of the guys I played with at the game will be there.” The retired UM football jerseys No. 10 (George Mira), No. 14 (Vinny Testaverde), No. 42 (Jim Dooley), and No. 89 (Ted Hendricks) will be joined by Torretta’s No. 13. “Many fantastic teammates and coaches helped me out,” Torretta remarked. It evokes a great deal of success and wonderful recollections. My identity has been shaped in part by the University of Miami.

Torretta’s last season was ‘92. Torretta started on UM’s undefeated ‘91 team and led the Hurricanes to an undefeated regular season in ‘92. “Gino is the most decorated college player in University of Miami football history and is also a member of our Ring of Honor, which serves as the highest honor for a Hurricanes football player or coach,’’ UM athletic director Dan Radakovich said in a school release. “We look forward to recognizing Gino and his family at Hard Rock Stadium.’’

Torretta continues to serve as senior vice president of his investing company Gabelli Asset Management in addition to hosting a nationwide radio broadcast of a college football game every Saturday for his company Touchdown Radio. Aria, his daughter, is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is married to Bernadette.
