Gordon, Miley, Guimaraes – The 14 Newcastle players on international duty next week
Newcastle have a significant cohort of players set to represent their countries during this month’s international break
with Anthony Gordon being one of them
Newcastle United’s rise through the Premier League ranks has seen the number of internationals within Eddie
Howe’s squad increase and the club can be proud of the cohort due to represent their countries this month.
Nine first-team stars, three youngsters and two loaners are due to don the colors of their nation during the upcoming
break. Howe will be hoping, though, that none of them suffer injuries amid a frustrating season dogged by setbacks.
Callum Wilson, Joelinton and Kieran Trippier all stay at home with the trio suffering from problems while Sandro
Tonali continues to serve his betting suspension. However, for those who are off on international duty, Howe will be
hoping that his Newcastle players can get enough minutes to keep up match sharpness ahead of the run-in.
This is Gordon’s first call-up for England, an ambition he has always had. He deserves it, too, and will be hoping to
edge his way into an outside spot for Euro 2024 this summer.
The 23-year-old suffered a leg injury in Monday’s 3-2 defeat to Chelsea, having to be withdrawn early, but his issue
was not serious and he will hope to make his senior international bow against Brazil or Belgium.
Miguel Almiron – Paraguay
Paraguay have agreed to play Russia – currently banned from UEFA and FIFA competition amid the invasion of
Ukraine – a week on Monday. Almiron has 50 appearances for his country ahead of the trip to Moscow.
Bruno Guimaraes – Brazil
Brazil may have two friendlies lined up, but both provide tough tests. Guimaraes and his squad face England at
Wembley next Saturday before a trip to the Bernabeu to take on Spain the following Tuesday.
Emil Krafth & Alexander Isak – Sweden
The duo have been called up to face Portugal and Albania in friendlies next week by manager Jon Dahl Tomasson,
the former Newcastle forward. The pair have a combined 86 caps for Sweden.
Fabian Schar – Switzerland
Schar is an international veteran and could reach 80 caps if he features against both Denmark and the Republic Of
Ireland. Switzerland have qualified for Euro 2024 and Schar will almost certainly be picked to play in Germany, if he
remains injury-free.
Martin Dubravka – Slovakia
Dubravka is a regular for Slovakia and will likely play against both Austria and Norway. He started all but one of his
country’s successful Euro 2024 group qualification campaign.
Lewis Miley & Lewis Hall – England U20s
Miley and Hall have both been selected to play for England’s ‘Elite League Squad’ next week. Hall has presented the
under-20s before while Miley has previously featured for the under-17s and under-19s. Poland’s and Czechia’s
under-20s are the opponents.
Others
Watford loanee Jamal Lewis has been chosen to represent Northern Ireland against Romania and Scotland this
break while Garang Kuol – on loan at Dutch club FC Volen dam – is due to feature for Australia’s under-23s.
Alex Murphy will play for Northern Ireland’s under-21s while Charlie McArthur and Jonny Emerson have
been called up to Scotland’s under-19 squad.
