Chris Sutton made a statement this week after Michael Beale was fired by Glasgow Rangers, which truly astonished BBC Sport host Mark Chapman.
After a dismal start to the season at Ibrox, the 43-year-old was fired. After dropping three of their first seven games, Rangers is now third in the Scottish Premiership standings.
Chris Sutton’s recent comments regarding Michael Beale and Rangers
A week after Giovanni van Bronckhorst was fired from his position as Glasgow Rangers manager in November of last year, Michael Beale was named the team’s new head coach.
Beale has since been under fire from Chris Sutton for what he did, but Chapman supported him by arguing that since he had previously served on the Rangers coaching staff, there was nothing improper about him being there.
Sutton was not persuaded, however, and described Beale’s actions as “despicable.” This is what they discussed on BBC Sport’s The Monday Night Club:
By the way, when he first got the job, Sutton said, “I have to admit that I thought that was quite terrible behavior, him coming up to a game while Gio van Bronckhorst, who actually did a pretty excellent job at Rangers, went up to a game and sat in the stands. I don’t know if that made people think, “Can you trust this guy?” less of him.
“Wait a second, he was a former Rangers coach. Why couldn’t he go back and watch a game?” questioned Chapman.
Are we acting as though he wasn’t aware of what he was doing at that specific moment, asked Sutton? I thought it was terrible to go up there and treat Van Bronckhorst like way; the man isn’t reliable.
“You can’t say that,” said Chapman. You must not say that.
“That’s my opinion, okay?” said Sutton. This is what I think. He said it everything, including, “We’ll see the real Rangers next time against Celtic.” Lose. “This is my team next season; things will improve; we did brilliantly in the transfer market,” the coach said.
