Barcelona’s Joan Laporta Criticizes La Liga Over Dani Olmo Registration Dispute
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has spoken out against La Liga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for their handling of the Dani Olmo registration case. The club’s financial struggles initially made it impossible for them to register both Dani Olmo and Pau Victor for the second half of the season due to wage cap restrictions. After La Liga rejected their request to extend the players’ eligibility, Barcelona lodged an appeal. On Wednesday, the Spanish National Sports Council (CSD) intervened, granting an urgent precautionary measure that temporarily allows both players to compete while the case remains unresolved.
This decision came just in time for the Supercopa de España final against Real Madrid. Laporta reportedly celebrated the ruling in Jeddah, where the final is being held, in front of RFEF and La Liga representatives. However, the victory was overshadowed by the lingering controversy, with Laporta publicly criticizing the governing bodies for their approach to the issue.
In an interview with Marca, Laporta expressed his frustration, saying, “The Supercup has been surrounded by controversy that could have been avoided if things were done differently. The fact is, it’s now resolved, and they will be able to play. From Barca’s point of view, we are satisfied.” Despite his remarks, the president continues to face criticism for the financial and administrative troubles surrounding the club.
This incident has reignited debates about La Liga’s stringent wage cap policies and their impact on clubs already grappling with financial challenges. For Barcelona, it’s another chapter in their ongoing battle to navigate these limitations while maintaining a competitive squad. As Laporta celebrates this short-term win, the pressure remains on him to address deeper issues affecting the club’s stability.
Looking ahead, Barcelona will shift their focus back to Spain after Sunday’s clash against Real Madrid. They are set to face Real Betis in the Copa del Rey round of 16 next Wednesday. As the team pushes forward, the lingering controversies will test their resilience both on and off the field.
