In the latest NHL Network analysis, former enforcer Stu Grimson has ranked Artemi Panarin as the second-best winger in the NHL. This acknowledgment comes in the wake of an impressive 2023-24 season for Panarin, who finished fourth overall in scoring, fifth in goals with 49, and also fifth in assists with 71. His total of 120 points narrowly missed breaking Jaromir Jagr’s franchise record of 123 points set during the 2005-06 season.

Grimson highlighted Panarin’s stellar performance, noting that while other wingers like Matthew Tkachuk may have had off years, Panarin’s exceptional campaign deserved recognition. He emphasized that Panarin’s 120-point achievement was significant and showcased his consistent brilliance throughout the season.

The fact that Panarin, despite his remarkable season, was placed fifth in the NHL Network’s rankings of top wingers was surprising to many. His performance, which included three first-place votes for the Hart Trophy and consideration as an MVP candidate, might have merited a higher position. This ranking seemed particularly surprising given Panarin’s historical impact on the Rangers, being one of only seven players in the team’s history to record over 100 points in a season.

Grimson’s list placed Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning at the top, with Panarin moving up to second due to his standout season. Panarin’s consistency since joining the NHL has been noteworthy, with multiple high-scoring seasons including a recent breakthrough into the 100-point territory. His achievements in previous years—95 points in 2019-20 and 113 points prorated for the 2021-22 season—demonstrate his consistent scoring prowess.

As the new season approaches, expectations are high that Panarin’s continued excellence will secure him a top spot among wingers. His ability to elevate his linemates and drive play has been a key factor in the Rangers’ success, including winning the Presidents’ Trophy and the Metro Division title. Grimson praised Panarin’s unique blend of skill and tempo, underscoring his exceptional talent and anticipating that he will continue to be a major force in the league.
