The AFL integrity unit has launched an investigation following a disturbing incident where a convicted felon was spotted in the Essendon Football Club’s changerooms after a match earlier this year. Kamil Yucel, known for his criminal history, was filmed in the club’s inner sanctum during Channel 7’s Roaming Brian segment after Essendon’s victory over Collingwood in Round 17 this past July.

Yucel is reportedly close to former Essendon player Nick Hind, who was recently delisted, and is part of the same social circle as forward Jake Stringer. During the post-game interview, commentator Brian Taylor approached Hind while he was conversing with Yucel, asking about their connection. Hind responded enigmatically, indicating that their relationship was one that he did not wish to disclose in detail. He noted, however, that they were good friends who had met a few months prior, adding that Yucel often provided support for both him and Stringer.

Further investigation into Yucel reveals a troubling past; he served a five-year prison sentence for the manslaughter of aspiring cricketer Rahat Khan in 2016. The circumstances surrounding this incident involved a confrontation that escalated into violence after Khan and a companion visited Yucel’s neighborhood, prompted by an alleged debt involving a notorious underworld figure. This context raises serious concerns regarding Yucel’s presence at a professional sports event.

In light of Yucel’s appearance, the AFL integrity unit has communicated with the Essendon Football Club, urging them to be more vigilant about the individuals granted access to the changerooms. An Essendon representative confirmed that the club received a caution regarding this matter, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a secure environment for players and staff.

As for the players involved, Nick Hind had a career with the Bombers spanning 74 games after transferring from St Kilda, but he was not retained for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Jake Stringer, who has one year left on his contract, is expected to leave the club during the trade period after a successful season in which he scored 42 goals. Reports suggest that Stringer may be headed to the GWS Giants, with Essendon unwilling to extend his contract.
