TIM VICKERY OFFERS INSIGHT INTO TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR TRANSFER TARGET PEPE OF PORTO AND BRAZIL

Tim Vickery has offered his expert insight into Tottenham Hotspur transfer target and Porto winger, Eduardo Gabriel Aquino Cossa, most commonly known as ‘Pepe’.

The South American football expert stated that Tottenham’s interest in the Brazil star is an ‘interesting one’ and he is somebody who has improved vastly during the past two seasons.

It has been suggested that Spurs are the mystery club that is making a move for the 26-year-old, with Vickery adding that Pepe could possibly be a ‘deputy’ for Dejan Kulusevki, as he told Transfer Talk on Sky Sports (24/08/23 at 12:25 pm).

Tottenham haven’t brought anyone in since they sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, with fans hoping that Ange Postecoglou will be backed even further during this last week of the window.

It could be a case of the London club needing to move players out, before they can bring in who they want, with Eric Dier making it clear that he isn’t going anywhere this summer.

Nonetheless, Vickery shared his thoughts on Pepe, the type of player he is and what type of roles he would fill for Spurs, if he were to join them.

“This is an interesting one,” said Vickery. “This is a Brazilian, Pepe, not the hulking centre-back at Porto.

“But a winger, well, I certainly remember him as a winger with Gremio, little mosquito kind of winger, who can do either flank.

“He has been in Portugal now with Porto for two years and they have got more out of him. They have used him all over the pitch. They have used him at fullback, wing-back, which is his more natural position higher up the field, so there is a lot more versatility there.

“Tottenham would be adding someone who could be a right-footed deputy for Kulusevski down that flank or he could be an attacking fullback for games against weaker opponents. The Portugal model, they want to buy cheap and sell expensive. They paid around 15 million Euros (£12.8m) for him and I think they will want around 50 million Euros (£42m) to move him on.”

him on.”

Can Tottenham clear the deadwood out?

There are players still at Spurs, who clearly don’t have a future, but are still taking up valuable wages and spaces others can take up.

Hugo Lloris is one of them, with the club’s longest-serving player not even training with the first team, whilst Sergio Reguilon’s time also seems to be up.

And whilst Davinson Sanchez has got some game time, he was booed by his own fans last season, and nothing has changed since.
