Prior to the 2024 AFLW season, the Dockers are closing in on the previous No. 1 selection and are targeting Pies veteran Frantle for a few important players during the trade window.

Fremantle Dockers close in on Western Bulldogs former No.1 pick Gabby Newtown Collingwood veteran Ash Brazill

Gabby Newton, the former AFLW No. 1 selection of the Western Bulldogs, is expected to join FREMANTLE, and in the lead-up to the Trade Period, the club is also pursuing a trade for Collingwood veteran Ash Brazill.

According to AFL.com.au, Newton has asked to be traded to the Dockers after the Dogs’ poor season—where they finished 1-9 before firing head coach Nathan Burke—was a source of frustration.

Although Newton has played 36 games for the Bulldogs in a variety of situations, she spent the most of her most recent season down back. Newton was the No. 1 pick in the 2020 AFLW Draft.

The probable loss of former All-Australian defender Katie Lynch is exacerbated by Newton’s anticipated departure; on Wednesday, AFL.com.au reported that Lynch appears to be heading for a move to Gold Coast.

In an effort to improve on their 4-6 season and make their first appearance in the AFLW finals since season six, the Dockers are also in talks to sign Brazill from the Magpies.

Brazill, 33, is a multi sports star who played netball for Australia in both the 2022 and 2023 Commonwealth Games and the Netball World Cup. She also played for five seasons with the West Coast Fever, a Perth-based netball club.

The seasoned player has participated in 32 AFLW matches for Collingwood. Prior to the team’s dissolution in June of this year, she played for and co-captained the Collingwood netball affiliate for seven seasons.

Brazill was chosen at full-back in 2019 and was an AFLW All-Australian.
