Mitchell was detained on Wednesday for possessing marijuana with the intention of selling or distributing it during a traffic stop in Bonifay, Florida.

“Tony Mitchell has been suspended from the team and all team activities until we gather more information about the situation and what his legal circumstance is,” Saban said. “Guys, everybody’s got an opportunity to make choices and decisions. There’s no such thing in being at the wrong place at the wrong time. You gotta be responsible for who you’re with, who you’re around and what you do, who you associate yourself with and the situations that you put yourself in.

“So it is what it is but there is cause and effect when you make choices and decisions that put you in bad situations.”

According to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office, deputies detected the odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle Mitchell was driving. He produced a baggie of marijuana, and after an additional search of the car a set of scales, a loaded handgun between the passenger seat and center console and a large amount of cash were also found.

Christopher Lewis, his passenger, was accused of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and possessing marijuana with the purpose to sell or distribute it. They were both brought to the jail in Holmes County.

Rank 64th on the SI99 for the class of 2023, the freshman defensive back was a unanimous 4-star prospect out of Thompson High School in Alabaster, Alabama. His selection to the Under Armour All-America Game is justified.
