A new goalie was chosen for the injury-ravaged Netherlands team.

October 6, Amsterdam (Reuters) – For their two European Championship qualifying matches this month against France and Greece, Netherlands selected a new goalkeeping option, but they will still need to play without several important injured players as they compete for a spot in the championships in Germany next year.

Coach Ronald Koeman benched Andries Noppert, the team’s first-choice goalkeeper from the World Cup the previous year, in favor of Sparta Rotterdam’s uncapped Nick Olij on Friday.

Injury to Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay leaves the Dutch depleted for the clashes against France in Amsterdam on Oct. 13 and Greece away in Athens on Oct. 16.

Koeman has recalled the Ajax Amsterdam striking duo Steven Bergwijn and Brian Brobbey as well as the German-based wingback Jeremie Frimpong, who has been called up previously but is yet to win a cap.

The Dutch have nine points from four matches in Group B, six behind leaders France, who have a 100% record. Greece are also on nine points but have played one match more than the Dutch while Ireland are in fourth spot in the group on three points.
