National Highways has warned that early estimates suggest the road could remain closed for over two hours

Following a catastrophic multi-vehicle accident that shut down the southbound carriageway, National Highways has announced a detour on the M1.

According to South Yorkshire Police, the pile-up on the motorway between Rotherham and Sheffield involved five vehicles. While the freeway is temporarily closed, traffic cops are still present.

Amazingly, it has been reported that no one has been wounded in the collision. According to preliminary estimations, the southbound lane between Junctions 35 and 34 won’t reopen until around 6.45 p.m.
