Bridge asserted that the center-back and the Italian never truly bonded during their time together in North London when speaking on the Last Word On Spurs podcast.
This season, Cristian Romero appears to be back to his best. The new co-vice-captain of North London, an Argentine, is loving the responsibility that comes with the position. And the early indications point to him and Micky van de Ven developing a fantastic partnership.
If Conte had remained, Romero intended to leave Tottenham.
It follows a far more discouraging year for the 25-year-old at the club level. Romero’s performance at Tottenham drastically declined after a stellar debut season. Additionally, the fact that he assisted Argentina in winning the World Cup in the middle of the season undoubtedly did not help.
However, it appears that Romero’s troubles last year may have been significantly influenced by his relationship with his manager. It’s obvious that very few players last season flourished under Antonio Conte. Bridge, though, asserted that if Conte had remained in charge, the defender might have even considered quitting the team.
Romero would have departed if Conte had stayed, a very reliable source told me about Romero. I don’t think they two really clicked at all, he said to Last Word On Spurs, but it is meaningless anymore.
Last season, Romero’s supporters in Tottenham were likely on the verge of dumping him at one point. He occasionally behaved recklessly, posing risky challenges and making a number of bad choices.
However, Antonio Conte’s stay is ultimately doing little to nothing for him. Of course, it must be acknowledged what a terrible time he was having off the field last season.
Romero did stay, which is fortunate for Tottenham because he is now flourishing under Ange Postecoglou. He is beginning to resemble the £42.86 million defender Spurs supporters were aware he might be.
It is unquestionably another evidence—if any were required—that Conte departing Tottenham late in the previous season was truly in everyone’s best interests.
