Although Fremantle’s AFLW journey ended with a 37-point loss to the Adelaide Crows, vice-captain Laura Pugh expressed immense pride in her team’s 2024 campaign. The Dockers showed resilience throughout a challenging season, despite their finals run being cut short.
Adelaide’s relentless pressure overwhelmed Fremantle, keeping them goalless in the first half and limiting them to just one major for the entire game. While the loss was disappointing, Pugh emphasized the positive aspects of the team’s performance and growth. “Adelaide brought their best today,” Pugh shared after the game. “In the first quarter, we stood strong against them and maintained belief even through halftime. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t our day.”
The Dockers battled numerous injuries this season, losing key players like captain Ange Stannett, forward Aine Tighe, and star midfielder Kiara Bowers. Yet, these setbacks highlighted the depth of Fremantle’s squad, as emerging players stepped into pivotal roles. Pugh commended the team’s ability to adapt, saying, “We pride ourselves on believing in every member of our group. Seeing players like Tunisha Kikoak and Gabby Biedenweg-Webster step up, despite joining us just weeks before the season, has been incredible.”
The challenges of 2024 forced Fremantle to reimagine their game plan, particularly in their forward line and midfield. Pugh noted how the team worked tirelessly to build connections and refine their strategies, paving the way for a stronger campaign next year. “The new faces in key positions have done a fantastic job building chemistry under pressure. This season has laid a foundation for what’s to come,” she added.
Despite the tough semifinal loss, Pugh remains optimistic about the Dockers’ future. She believes the team’s determination and adaptability will fuel their 2025 season. “We’ve got areas to improve, but this year’s experience has been invaluable. After a well-deserved break, we’ll regroup and come back stronger next year,” Pugh concluded, reflecting the unwavering spirit of Fremantle’s AFLW squad.
