Collingwood has made a bold move by signing former St Kilda forward Tim Membrey, aiming to enhance their squad with experienced players as they continue to pursue another premiership. This acquisition reflects the Magpies’ strategy of adding mature, proven talent to keep their championship window open. Membrey’s move to Collingwood, confirmed on the opening day of the delisted free agency period, comes on the heels of a strong finish to his 2024 season with St Kilda, where he kicked 14 goals in six games.

The 30-year-old forward’s decision was partly influenced by his longstanding friendship with former Sydney teammate Tom Mitchell. Membrey and Mitchell originally connected as young players with the Sydney Swans and have maintained a close relationship. This bond played a role in Membrey’s interest in Collingwood, especially after his manager informed him of the club’s interest. Reflecting on the move, Membrey expressed enthusiasm about joining Collingwood’s training and working alongside Mitchell once more.

Collingwood’s list manager, Justin Leppitsch, shared insight into the team’s decision to bring Membrey on board. Leppitsch highlighted that the Magpies were specifically searching for a resilient forward capable of supporting key players like Brody Mihocek and Dan McStay. He described Membrey as not only a skillful forward but also a leader whose presence would add both athletic and personal value to the club. “We welcome Tim, his wife Emily, and their children Wren and Beau to our Collingwood family,” Leppitsch said, underscoring the club’s commitment to creating a supportive environment for its players.

As the Magpies prepare for the 2025 season, Membrey joins a roster that already includes several players over the age of 30, aligning with head coach Craig McRae’s “players over picks” philosophy. This veteran-focused strategy led Collingwood to make room on their primary list by delisting Oleg Markov and Ash Johnson, with plans to potentially redraft these players through the rookie draft later in November.

With 293 goals in 179 games spanning his career with Sydney and St Kilda, Membrey brings valuable experience and scoring capability to Collingwood. His addition is expected to bolster the forward line and offer the Magpies more flexibility and depth as they gear up for another premiership campaign. For Membrey, this new chapter represents an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and embrace fresh challenges, all while contributing to Collingwood’s ambitious goals.
