The Sydney Swans have made significant moves as they prepare for the upcoming rookie draft, having announced the delisting of defender Joel Hamling and versatile player Aaron Francis. However, the club is set to bring both players back into the fold, aiming to secure their spots in the rookie draft scheduled for November.
Aaron Francis, who joined the Swans from Essendon at the conclusion of the 2022 season, has seen a mixed career at Sydney. Over his time with the club, he has participated in 20 matches, though his involvement was limited to just five games in 2024. Initially making a strong impression, Francis quickly adapted to the team’s style, showcasing his adaptability during his first year when he played 15 games.
On the other hand, Joel Hamling finds himself at a crossroads in his career. The 31-year-old has now played for four different clubs, transitioning to Sydney from Fremantle after the 2023 season. Unfortunately, Hamling did not feature in any senior matches during the current season, which has been a setback for the seasoned player who boasts over a decade of experience across teams like Geelong, the Western Bulldogs, and Fremantle.
In a positive turn of events, the Swans Academy product Indhi Kirk has secured a new contract that guarantees his position as a Category B rookie with the Swans until at least the end of 2025. Although he has yet to make his senior debut, Kirk has been making strides, having participated in 25 games with the Swans’ VFL team since joining the senior list in November 2023.
As the Swans look ahead, these strategic decisions reflect their commitment to nurturing talent and enhancing their roster for future competitions, ensuring that both experienced players and promising newcomers contribute to the team’s success.
