Narrm’s finals dream is alive after a commanding 47-point win over Collingwood at Ikon Park on Saturday afternoon. The Demons, whose season once seemed on the brink after a tough start, now await their fate with hope. With injuries casting a shadow over much of their year, their resurgence is a testament to their resilience and the gradual return of key players. Now, they only need Essendon to fall to Carlton in the evening game to secure their spot in the finals for the sixth straight year.
In a season-defining performance, Narrm jumped out early and maintained control, securing an 11.8 (74) to 4.3 (27) victory. Captain Kate Hore made a triumphant return, having recovered from a minor quad strain that sidelined her the previous week. Hore led by example, delivering three goals and 17 disposals, while Liv Purcell controlled the midfield with a game-high eight clearances. Despite Collingwood’s struggles, key players like Brit Bonnici and Ruby Schleicher fought hard, with Bonnici contributing 20 disposals and two goals.
Narrm’s intensity set the tone from the outset. Their relentless tackling and fast ball movement kept Collingwood’s defense under pressure, and they surged to a 31-point lead by halftime. Although the Magpies managed to halt Narrm’s momentum briefly with a goal from Bonnici, costly mistakes and fouls saw the ball frequently in Narrm’s attacking zone. Hore’s goal from a high-contact free kick seemed to open the floodgates, and Narrm piled on three more goals to cement their lead before halftime.
The highlight of the third quarter came with a thrilling goal by Eden Zanker, who showcased her skill with a one-on-one win and snap from inside 50, widening the lead to 39 points. Collingwood defender Stacey Livingstone pushed forward in her final AFLW quarter, hoping for a fairytale ending, but her efforts went unrewarded as Narrm held firm. Eliza McNamara was also instrumental for the Demons, gathering 32 disposals and gaining 527 meters, making her one of the standout players on the field.
Adding an emotional note to the game, 36-year-old Demons ruck Rhi Watt hinted at retirement during a live interview, marking an end to a dedicated career in AFLW. Now, all eyes turn to the Carlton-Essendon match. With the Demons’ season hanging in the balance, a Blues win would seal Narrm’s place in the finals.
