Alpine skier Matilde Lorenzi, a promising 19-year-old athlete from Italy, has sadly passed away following a training accident in northern Italy. According to the Italian Ministry of Defense, Lorenzi was seriously injured while practicing on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales and was subsequently transported to a local hospital.
The Italian Ministry expressed its heartfelt condolences, stating, “The defense ministry and Minister Guido Crosetto offer their deepest sympathies and support to the family and colleagues of Corporal Matilde Lorenzi.” This sentiment was echoed by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), which labeled Lorenzi’s death a “tragic loss” for the entire skiing community.
In a statement, the FIS conveyed their sorrow over Lorenzi’s passing and acknowledged the grief shared by her teammates, coaches, and the broader winter sports community in Italy. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Matilde Lorenzi, as announced by the Italian Ministry of Defense, who conveyed heartfelt condolences for the 19-year-old athlete of the Italian Army,” they said.
Despite the medical efforts following her fall, which included helicopter transport to a Bolzano hospital, Lorenzi was unable to recover from her injuries. Last season, she made her mark by competing in the junior world championships, where she secured sixth place in downhill and eighth in super-G. Additionally, Lorenzi had an impressive performance in the European Cup circuit and was crowned the Italian junior overall and Super-G champion.
Lorenzi’s legacy continues with her sister, Lucrezia, who competes in slalom at the World Cup level. As the skiing community mourns this tragic event, they remember Matilde Lorenzi not only for her athletic achievements but also for the vibrant spirit she brought to the sport.
