In a powerful display, Walyalup secured their finals position with a commanding 30-point win against Greater Western Sydney (GWS) at Henson Park, bringing the score to 7.13 (55) to 4.1 (25). This victory not only strengthens Walyalup’s place in the finals but also keeps alive their hope for a top-four finish, which would secure them a double chance in the competition.
The match saw Walyalup’s Aisling McCarthy come out strong from the start, kicking the first goal in the opening minute and gathering an impressive nine disposals early on. McCarthy went on to score two more goals, including a memorable one in the final term, showcasing her skill and determination with a total of 22 disposals and a game-high 456 meters gained. Mim Strom also made her mark, dominating the ruck with 33 hit-outs and pressing her case for an All-Australian selection.
Walyalup outperformed GWS in contested possessions (111-97) and kept consistent pressure on the Giants’ defense, resulting in a higher inside-50 count of 44-33. Orlagh Lally added to the scoreboard with two goals, while Ariana Hetherington celebrated her first career goal, surrounded by excited teammates.
