In a strong finish to the season, the Walyalup (Fremantle) Dockers clinched their spot in the AFLW finals, overpowering the Greater Western Sydney Giants by 30 points at Henson Park. The Dockers were in control from the start, establishing an early lead and maintaining their advantage throughout to finish 7.13 (55) to 4.1 (25). This victory, boosted by Naarm’s (Melbourne) loss to Hawthorn, ensured Walyalup’s place in the finals, even as their hopes of a top-four finish remain a challenge.
The Dockers’ defense was especially robust, handling the Giants’ offensive efforts with ease and keeping up steady pressure in their forward half. Early in the game, Walyalup’s relentless attack forced GWS into turnovers, providing valuable scoring opportunities. However, an injury scare emerged for the Dockers when key defender Ash Brazill left the game in the third quarter with an ankle issue, casting some concern over her availability for upcoming matches.
Key performances from standout players fueled the Dockers’ win. Aisling McCarthy delivered a stellar showing with 22 disposals and three goals, while Emma O’Driscoll tallied 12 intercept possessions, marking a season high. McCarthy continued her excellent form, scoring the game’s opening goal within the first minute and finishing an impressive first quarter with nine disposals, three tackles, and three inside 50s. Megan Kauffman, Orlagh Lally, and Gabby O’Sullivan were also instrumental in maintaining possession and control.
Although GWS mounted some resistance, including quick goals from Aliesha Newman and Tarni Evans to trim Walyalup’s lead early in the second quarter, the Dockers weathered the storm with steady composure. Kauffman’s goal, set up by Ebony Antonio’s clean passing, provided a needed boost, while Lally’s fierce tackling and interception added to the team’s control. By half-time, Walyalup had stretched their lead to 21 points.
As the game neared its end, McCarthy’s exceptional skill was on display once more as she executed a boundary-side goal, securing Walyalup’s commanding win. Ariana Hetherington also kicked her first career goal, and Eilish O’Dowd capped off the Dockers’ scoring efforts with a late goal, wrapping up an impressive team performance that sends Walyalup into the finals for the first time since 2022.
