Swiss Alpine skier Niels Hintermann has recently been diagnosed with lymph node cancer, leading him to make the difficult decision to miss the upcoming season in order to focus on his treatment. At 29 years old, Hintermann discovered a lump on his neck a few weeks ago, prompting medical examinations that revealed a tumor on the left side of his neck as well as under his collarbone. The Swiss Ski Federation announced that he will undergo a rigorous treatment plan that includes both chemotherapy and radiotherapy, expected to last around six months.
In a heartfelt statement, Hintermann reflected on the unexpected nature of his diagnosis, stating, “Unfortunately, we see once again how unpredictable and unplanable life is.” He expressed his gratitude for the high curability of this type of cancer and emphasized the importance of support from his wife, family, sponsors, the ski association, and his medical team. “We are all pulling together, and this will give me the strength to get through this difficult time. Now I have to survive the only important battle,” he added.
A physician from the Swiss Ski Federation mentioned that there is hope for Hintermann to return for the 2025-26 season, which highlights the optimism surrounding his treatment and recovery. Hintermann has made significant strides in his skiing career, having secured three World Cup victories, with his latest triumph occurring in February 2024 during a downhill event in Kvitfjell, Norway. He also finished sixth in the World Cup downhill standings for the previous season, underscoring his competitive spirit and talent.
The sports community is rallying around Hintermann during this challenging period. His journey serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience athletes often show both on and off the slopes. Fans and fellow athletes alike are sending their well wishes and support as he navigates this health battle.
As he focuses on recovery, Hintermann’s story shines a light on the realities many athletes face, illustrating that their strength extends beyond the competitive arena. With the support of his loved ones and medical professionals, he aims to overcome this challenge and hopes to return to skiing, stronger than ever.
