In a recent revelation, Port Adelaide recruit Jack Lukosius shared that he was on the verge of signing with the Adelaide Crows instead of the Power. The athletic forward had aspirations to return to his home state of South Australia this year, even though he had two years remaining on his contract with Gold Coast. His discussions with the Suns paved the way for a move at the conclusion of the 2024 season, with considerable interest from both local clubs.

Lukosius, a product of Woodville-West Torrens, found himself courted by both the Crows and the Power. After extensive meetings with representatives from both teams, he ultimately chose to join Port Adelaide. This decision was particularly challenging for the 24-year-old, who grew up as an Adelaide supporter but has a strong connection to the Power through his friendship with captain Connor Rozee. Reflecting on his choice, Lukosius noted that he felt more aligned with Port Adelaide’s direction under coach Ken Hinkley.

“I was very close with both clubs,” Lukosius stated during a recent interview. He acknowledged that both teams made compelling pitches, and he believed he could integrate well with either. The process of deciding, however, was no small feat, involving difficult phone calls to both clubs. Ultimately, he felt that Port Adelaide offered the best opportunity for him to advance his career and be part of a promising team.

Making the decision to leave the Suns after six seasons was equally difficult for Lukosius. He had hoped to contribute to breaking Gold Coast’s ongoing finals drought but recognized that the club was shifting its focus. The 116-gamer expressed that, despite his commitment to Gold Coast, he realized a change might benefit both his playing style and career trajectory. “I gave my all, but it didn’t culminate in the success I had hoped for,” he reflected, acknowledging the need for growth in his career.
