Port Adelaide’s list manager, Chris Davies, has shed light on the club’s involvement in the recent three-way trade that saw Dan Houston move to Collingwood. According to Davies, while Port Adelaide briefly paused negotiations, they never fully stepped away from the deal. The temporary halt allowed the club to explore additional trade opportunities and maximize their return before finalizing the transaction. Ultimately, Port Adelaide deemed the trade package the best possible outcome for the team’s long-term strategy.

As part of the trade, Port Adelaide sacrificed its future first-round pick in exchange for Gold Coast’s No. 13 selection. The club also welcomed new players Jack Lukosius, Rory Atkins, and Collingwood’s Joe Richards. Davies admitted that these acquisitions were driven by a need to strengthen the team’s depth, particularly with mature-age players, and improve performance in the forward half. Lukosius and Richards, in particular, were seen as essential to addressing the team’s vulnerabilities in that area.

Davies emphasized that the decision to move forward with the trade stemmed from recognizing Houston’s preference to join Collingwood rather than North Melbourne. He acknowledged that trade negotiations are often fluid, and while the club considered alternative approaches, they eventually agreed that the deal as structured would best serve Port Adelaide’s future. Reflecting on previous trades, Davies expressed confidence that the team has consistently improved its position through careful negotiation and strategic decision-making.

On a separate note, Davies addressed rumors surrounding ruckman Ivan Soldo, who was reportedly seeking a move to St Kilda but will remain with Port Adelaide for the 2024 season. Davies dismissed claims of discontent, noting that any speculation about Soldo’s dissatisfaction had been exaggerated. He confirmed that the ruckman had full support from the club, including his decision to attend a wedding on the night of the team’s best and fairest event.

In conclusion, Davies affirmed that Port Adelaide is in a solid position moving forward. The club’s recent trades have strengthened its roster, and while there may be further adjustments during the trade and draft period, the Power are confident in their strategy and the depth they’ve built. The focus now is on ensuring players like Soldo are fully integrated, with competition for spots set to drive performance in the upcoming season.
