Negotiations are currently in progress between North Melbourne and Sydney regarding veteran midfielder Luke Parker, but they have not begun smoothly. Reports indicate that the Swans have turned down North Melbourne’s initial trade proposal, which included draft picks in exchange for Parker, a seasoned player with 293 games under his belt and former captain of the team.

Despite having a year left on his contract, Parker is keen on making a move to Arden Street this off-season. The Kangaroos plan to offer Sydney draft capital to facilitate the transfer of the three-time best and fairest winner. Initial discussions commenced this week, with the goal of finalizing a deal that would see Parker don the North Melbourne colors.

Currently, North Melbourne holds draft picks 2, 25, 44, and 62 for the upcoming AFL Draft, having already traded Pick 67 (now 68) to secure Jack Darling from West Coast. According to AFL.com.au, the Kangaroos’ latest offer included Pick 62 for Parker, which did not meet Sydney’s expectations. It is believed that Pick 44 could potentially satisfy the Swans, while a future third-round pick might also be on the table as part of the negotiation.

The Kangaroos seem reluctant to part with Pick 25, as they are also navigating potential trade discussions with the Western Bulldogs regarding versatile player Caleb Daniel. Daniel, who has two years left on his contract and is four years younger than Parker, may also be on their radar after both players experienced limited game time this season.

In addition to pursuing Parker, North Melbourne is eyeing Port Adelaide’s Dan Houston, with their future first-round selection being offered as part of that pursuit. However, Houston is expected to attract interest from Collingwood or Carlton, which means the Kangaroos might leverage their earliest 2025 pick to enhance their draft position this year.

The trade period is set to close next Wednesday at 7:30 PM (ADST), making the coming days crucial for North Melbourne as they look to solidify their roster ahead of the new season.
