The Colorado Rockies have confirmed that Bud Black, their most successful manager to date, will remain at the helm for the 2025 season. This announcement follows a challenging year, marking the franchise’s sixth consecutive season without a winning record.
With the extension of Black’s contract, the Rockies aim to build on a difficult 2024, which concluded with a disappointing 61-101 record—ranking as the second-worst in Major League Baseball, only surpassing the Chicago White Sox’s 41-121. Additionally, the organization has decided not to bring back bullpen coach Reid Cornelius and assistant hitting coach P.J. Pilittere, indicating a potential shift in coaching strategy.
In a statement, Rockies senior vice president and general manager Bill Schmidt expressed optimism about the team’s direction. He acknowledged that while recent performances fell short of expectations, the emergence of talented young players provides hope. Schmidt emphasized the organization’s commitment to delivering a competitive team, highlighting that the development of their core roster and farm system, alongside Black’s leadership, will be crucial for future success.
Throughout the past season, Black and the Rockies have focused on integrating promising young talent, such as Ezequiel Tovar, Michael Toglia, and Brenton Doyle. They also look forward to welcoming right-hander Chase Dollander, their 2023 first-round draft pick, and third-overall pick Charlie Condon, who can add depth to the roster.
The Rockies have not seen postseason action since 2018, a time when they boasted an impressive lineup that included players like Charlie Blackmon, who recently retired, alongside stars such as Carlos González, Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story, and DJ LeMahieu. Bud Black, who became the seventh manager in franchise history in November 2016, is recognized for his strong connections with players and his ability to revitalize a struggling team, having led them to an 87-75 record in his first full season and a playoff appearance the following year. However, significant roster changes, including the departures of key players, have presented ongoing challenges in recent seasons.
