The 2024 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period has officially begun, and Chris Keane, the Head of List Strategy and Player Personnel for the Sydney Swans, shared insights with AFL.com.au’s Cal Twomey about the club’s approach during this crucial time.

Regarding Luke Parker, Keane noted that discussions with North Melbourne have yet to commence. Last week, Parker indicated his desire to explore a potential deal with the club. Keane acknowledged the complexities involved, given Parker’s current contract status. He emphasized the importance of Parker to the team, recognizing his contributions over the years. While they aim to engage in meaningful discussions this week, Keane stressed that navigating Parker’s contracted status will be essential to any negotiations.

When asked about the Swans’ overall activity during this trade period, Keane hinted that the club would likely take a more restrained approach compared to 2023. With a couple of promising first-round picks in hand, the Swans are eager to participate in what is expected to be a rich and competitive draft. Keane expressed enthusiasm following three days spent with prospective draftees at the draft combine, highlighting the impressive talent on display and the excitement of potentially enhancing their roster through the draft.

Chad Warner’s situation was also a focal point in the discussion. Keane praised Warner as one of the brightest young talents in the AFL, acknowledging his significance to the Swans. The club is proactively engaging with Warner’s management, as they do with all players nearing the end of their contracts, regardless of whether it’s a year or two away. Keane reiterated the organization’s commitment to retaining key talents like Warner, emphasizing the tight-knit nature of the team and the importance of continuity.

As the trade period unfolds, the Sydney Swans are poised to make strategic decisions while valuing their current roster and planning for future talent acquisition. The focus remains on building a strong foundation for the team while navigating the complexities of the trade landscape.
