The U.S. Alpine Ski Team is gearing up for the 2024-25 season with significant coaching changes that promise to shape the future of the team. Ian Garner, who has been a vital presence as the head men’s World Cup tech coach, will step down. Taking his place are former coaches from the French Ski Federation, Fabien Munier and Claude Cretier, alongside Rudi Soulard, who has been elevated to head women’s tech coach. This restructuring follows a successful 2023-24 season, during which the team secured ten World Cup victories and numerous podium finishes, including nine wins by standout athlete Mikaela Shiffrin.
Anouk Patty, the Chief of Sport for U.S. Ski & Snowboard, expressed enthusiasm about the new additions to the coaching staff. “Our successful season has set a strong foundation, and these new hires will help us build on that momentum,” she stated. Mark Tilston will take the reins as head coach of the men’s team, while Paul Kristofic will lead the women’s squad. Under Garner’s guidance, the men’s tech team consistently delivered strong performances, highlighted by River Radamus’ first podium finish this past season.
Fabien Munier has been appointed as the head men’s World Cup giant slalom coach. Having worked with the French Ski Federation and world champion Alexis Pinturault, Munier brings a wealth of experience to the U.S. team. Claude Cretier, another addition from the French coaching ranks, has a successful background, including coaching Olympians like Victor Muffat-Jeandet. Tilston believes that the combined experience of Munier and Cretier will elevate the team’s competitive edge. “Their track records showcase their capability to push our athletes to achieve even greater results,” he noted.
In a similar vein, Tristan Glasse-Davies is set to guide the men’s slalom World Cup team after his previous successes with GB Snowsports. His experience includes coaching rising stars and helping Dave Ryding become the first British alpine skier to win a World Cup race. Meanwhile, Clement Tomamichel is taking on leadership of the men’s Europa Cup team, bringing insights from his tenure coaching the women’s development squad in France.
The women’s alpine team also sees changes, with Rudi Soulard stepping in as the new head tech coach after Magnus Andersson’s departure. Soulard previously assisted Andersson and has an impressive resume that includes coaching Olympic medalists and world champions. Mikaela Shiffrin will be joined by Janne Haarala, a seasoned coach from Norway, who is eager to contribute to the success of one of the most accomplished alpine skiers in history. With Miha Kurner leading the women’s Europa Cup team, U.S. Ski & Snowboard feels confident about the future. Patty remarked, “These new appointments will enhance our competitive strategy as we approach a crucial World Championships season and the upcoming Olympics.”
